monument builders is the new album from loscil, the ambient/electronic project of prolific composer scott morgan. it was primarily created on sample-based instruments in morgan ’,s century-old vancouver home. like that aged space, this music is also rough-hewn, with rickety samples of boiling kettles and resonant moving air. recordings from a vintage micro-cassette recorder contribute distortion, rattles and textures that serve as both percussion and abstract aural color.

(rod remix) after tearing apart the mary go wild basement last year, gregor tresher returned to amsterdam for the worldwide release of his new quiet distortion album on vinyl. he left us with a track that needs to be heard. we got him in touch with another basement legend, benny rodrigues, who obviously didn’t hesitate to join in and make the remix under his rod malmok techno alter ego.

the original track is an industrial and distortion experimental project of the owner label federico amoroso which contain a really metallic and dark sound. positive centre his remix it s a dark walk into industrial noise and distortion audio bites, with ambiental moment and powerfull distroy counter. the first track of b side it s remixed by italian producer plukkk which heavy dominating with relentless attitude and distortion driving kick - drum, with big impact for the dancefloor. the last remix is an collaboration with the japanese producer yuuki sakai which has an original idea to add a lyrical singer in the middle of distortion broken techno beat. the new label started well: arriving the big names of the genre and industrial noise skarn division label founder federico amoroso, a new label that will touch many different genres and musical nuances: techno, industrial, noise, drone, ambient and experimental, a melting pot of sounds joined together by a passion for harsh corners and futuristic electronics. artists who remix the first disc of the founder federico amoroso are positive centre (who played several times in places like berghain and tresor), plukkk and yuuki sakai: every producer knows that long in the field of industrial techno and noise music (just look, to name one, the presence of the same positive centre to the latest editions of the berlin atonal festival, or even yuuki sakai: remixed by oscar mulero .. and so on!)

last year saw casablanca-based cosmo records launch its most ambitious project todate, celebrating five years of cross-cultural collaboration. the three vinyl releasesfeatured producers such as san proper, radiq, pier bucci and dandy jack working with moroccan musicians to create a true fusion between modern electronics and ancient traditions. the purpose of cosmo has always been to find a natural meeting place between thesedistinct musical forms, bringing out the best strengths of each practice through real time spent together in the studio, where each artist can truly understand the other in a shared quest for sonic harmony. as such, this latest release marks a step forward in exploring this idea through a new series entitled cosmo jam. as the title suggests, the focus here is on live improvisation. in late 2014 parisian producers masomenos and vadim svoboda travelled to morocco and set up their equipment at the coda casablanca music center. they were joined by m’hamed el menjra playing bass, abdessamad boussahfa on violin and sanhaji on darbuka, and the ensuing jam sessions between these musicians now make their way on to vinyl. no editing or post-production took place – the music you hear on the record was created entirely in the moment. each track highlights the magic of a different instrument – on “be” menjra’s double bass comes twisting through effects processing and subtle distortion, meeting with a low-slung broken beat groove from the visiting french producers. sanhaji’s thrilling percussive flair on the darbuka flirts perfectly with the crisp programming of drums and bass on the uptempo “kaled” and the more laid-back “petit”. boussahfa’s violin makes for some of the most arresting moments on the release, meeting with intricate minimalist rhythms on “mon” and shining in the heart-rending ambience of “frere”. presented across two 12”s, this collection of six tracks tells a most honest account of how gifted artists from entirely different disciplines can find a common ground and create something truly unique. without any studio trickery to hide behind, this is the concept of cosmo records laid bare, and the results prove it is a concept worth exploring further.

black merlin has gone on to release on a number of labels from around the globe including world unknown, crimes of the future, ln-cc, new jersey, common thread, island of the gods and sorn. more recently black merlin has debuted his first solo album on indonesian label island of the gods which came about when george was asked to travel over to indonesia to record traditional gamelan music and put together an album of his time over there from the field recordings hed gathered which is now complete. black merlin makes his debut on omnidisc records, with a two tracker of hard hitting distortion. with jealous god, eerie and l.i.e.s on his c.v. they don t come much more approved that domenico crisci, but few would be prepared for the onslaught that leaps out of this first release on summa cum laude. the violinist champions distortion as a weapon, running everything through a fuzz pedal in a most unrelenting of fashions. its certainly not for the feint-hearted, and all the more powerful with it. meanwhile return would sound brutal in any other context were it not for what came before, all slamming, grubby drums and the noises that splay off them. blacklord them manages to push the vibe further back into the red with a searing throwdown to finish the ep off in a masterful display of intensity.

escorting sarah hit the ground running with ‘elephant in my box’, its low slung cavernous kick drum making a serious statement of intent before the the track’s grimy synth pushes forth to serve up some deliciously sleazy warehouse vibes. ‘pov’ ups the dirt considerably, metallic shards of phunk permeate, their edges rubbed raw with distortion whilst ‘spank’ offers up a sleeker, but no less deadly, slab of techno weaponry.

why making a techno record in 2016? in the vast stream of new releases and the everlasting quest of new musical boundaries, blint002 tries to focus on the essentials of pattern-based clubmusic. both tracks started as late night studio jams, using only a drummaschine, a synth and some pedals. while 92 avenue ended up being a straightfoward technotrack, including a massive breakdown for everybody still awake and dancing, you have i dont have is incorporating some boomy hiphop aesthetic without loosing its connection to the dancefloor. both tracks are linked by their unresting synthlines, straying around, trapped in a noisey room full of smoke and distortion. bouncing back to the inital question, the answer with this record seems pretty clear: techno is still nothing but pure dark fun.

the newest entry in the srr catalogue comes from founder of monolith records and resident of liber null berlin, sirio grimaldi. the release delivers a collection of tracks deeply inspired by human genetics and nanotechnology where in a post-industrial techno conundrum heavy distortion and deep sub frequencies merge together to bring to life a dark, heavy yet delicate avante-garde modern techno intepretation. ken karter and mynude support the release by sharing their interpretations of the two main tracks with hypnotic unorthodox techno rollers.

for the second and last ep of contemporary spaces remixes, dynamic reflection welcomes yet another batch of talented producers to the label. just like the first remix ep, it is a mix between household names, and up and comers. first off, it’s perc’s interpretation of glide. the uk based artist, who is known for his use of distortion and aggressiveness, takes it down a notch on this occasion. he has made glide into a echoing and glitchy track that doesn t reach its energy peak until the last couple of minutes. matrixxman takes overwith his biohazard mix of future existence, which contains a tensive synth, confined by a filter that gradually opens,and than closes again, retaining your attention at all times. on the bside, shdw and obscure shape reshaped the hunt to provide the first outright dance floor track of the ep. with its thumping kick and epic pads around the breaks, it’s bound to win crowds over in the club. dutch talent ben buitendijk also remixed future existence, in his own distinctive, hypnotic style. a deep, though energetic track with a very mature sound.

the first record on new york trax imports is a split ep by the stockholm-based artist dawid dahl and another alias, a seasoned techno producer from ireland. dawid dahl’s ‘krig’ and ‘gehenna’ are two beautiful, yet intense and dark tracks. they are accompanied by ‘craic fiend’, a ruthless face melter combining fast tempo, distortion and a mind-blowing off-beat breakdown.

renormalon is a collaborative effort between elena sizova, heinrich mueller: music data and dr olga karelkina: visual data + encoding. its purpose technically is to visually and sonically communicate the renormalon physics principle. each composition is separate component of the theory representing a particular phenomenon in the realm of quantum uncertainty. the observer is to be immersed conceptually and hopefully will experience discrete states of energy which is integral in atomic behavior.

180g vinyl only release! marionette wanders through the polyrhythms and shifting harmonics of benjamin kilchhofer’s “dersu”. this is an expedition into modular synthesis and physical modelling, where patches become complex instruments, and the instruments become music. kilchhofer composes the 4th marionette instalment, enveloped in a film of spring reverb and tube distortion.

nice price deal !!! manchester s techno alchemist and master of the roland tr-808, the enigmatic mr.raw, debuting mancdetroit 12” on win or loose records straight outta toronto ca! long term nightclub shaman on the northwest of england circuit, raw served time in rotterdam s early 90s gabba circles before returning back to manchester to twist brain s n bodies with his wild blend of freestyle techno. raw s witnessed trends in production go from hardware to soft and back again but he s never strayed from a solid rack mount set up based solely around the tr-808. with a few added choice fx processors raw s style is loose n live and captures a pure spirit rarely exercised by today s pacified youth. -perseus dance- sounds like the kind of shit the great ron hardy would jam on, with two copies, for hours. inflicting a sherm-stick flavored mind-blast to the floor that may have indeed caused the good man to blush, we find percolating 808 percussion woven together with a mystic, fizzing lead line and twangy analogue artifacts. darkside acid dragged wailing and whining from rusholmes drains. flip and we have -hard on-: a twisted x-rated porno horror jam. raw s rapid-fire double-speed drum loops firing away while a plethora of abhorrent vox and coital sounds converge onto the track. a total wrecking ball of filth and hellish distortion which just smolders away in the basement of some sadistic nightclub like a rotten but highly intoxicating fungus ready to switch on any passing freaks.

british born and now based in berlin, dead fader aka john cohen, most known for his work on robot elephant records and the brilliant collaboration with sensational on the ‘work it, no’ ep, now joins the touchin’ bass roster with the ‘dosage’ ep, a heavy duty, unrepentant body of work that exposes john’s diversity. easing you in gently is ‘booze lair’, a slow building, infernal, smacked out foray that is both biting and compelling, followed by ‘tired’, a fiercely adrenaline-charged, dynamic workout that moves and mutates, heavily laced with abrasive textures. the title track ‘dosage’ is a straight up slice, filled with cranks and grinds which jars and grates, punctuated with weighty subversive beats and a low res undertone, followed by the calm after the storm, ‘easy sun’. an epic piece, pushing distortion to the max. no nonsense, this is one heavy slab of vinyl. solid!

london-based producer guy andrews is renowned for creating textural electronic music, combining influences from post-rock, techno, ambient and afrobeat. after releasing on hemlock, hotflush and pennyroyal, scoring for photographer nadav kander, and remixing massive attacks robert del naja, he makes his houndstooth debut with in autumn arm’. on the title track, a simple guitar melody falls melancholically over a bed of synth loops and string ensemble, while snares and thundering drums meld with distortion to heighten the tension. let your shadow decide is the a-sides darker, downbeat counterpart, opening with tremolo strings and a weighty bass-line, while emphatic drums build toward the tracks climax. although seemingly disparate, guys use of wall-of-sound noise and softer strings is skilfully mixed, carried forward by the stark guitar lead.

fresh from his contribution to the butter sessions sounds from the suburbs v.a., bayside lab-rat dan white delivers three disparate tracks of alien electronics. on the hammer (think mix) white takes a heavy inhale before descending deep sea with a near 11 minute junglist house epic! just a beat sells itself short with its club ready distortion while the blissed out meditation sacoid cleanses the peaking dawn raiders. some of the finest work from this melbourne prodigy, with artwork by lloyd collins.

sean hernandez, a.k.a. chicago skyway presents * empty patterns* on emphasis recordings. in the past, chicago skyway has recorded for labels such as eargasmic recordings, m>o>s deep, uzuri, altered moods recordings, and machining dreams, to name a few. empty patterns is a collection of tracks named after empty, programmable user patterns founds in most modern sequencers, synthesizers, and drum machines. we can only speculate which instrument was used for these tracks. all tracks are dj tools and is geared towards djs and dance floors. lots of chicago jacking house style drum patterns and bass synth stabs, with added reverb and distortion for grit and color.

kyle geiger returns to droid recordings for a three-track suite of techno and rhythmic experiments, jupiter storm. a1 (jupiter, hydrogen edit) builds from a rumbling kick, slowly constructing a space of delayed tones and filtered noisse pressure aimed at the dancefloor. b1 (mars) takes things for a truly unexpected turn, borrowing some of jupiter’s sonic language and reformulating a triple-metered groove with waves of noise and distortion. the title track, jupiter storm (b2) brings the full kick back into the picture riding the mars rhythms against the standard kick for a track that’s driving and infectious.

vent adds yet again new sonic influences to its palette, this time owing thanks to its main curator tolga baklacioglu. with this release, we are pleased to add more than just a sprinkle of industrial and ebm influences to the catalogue of records we are proud to say is the sound of vent. to make things even better, one of more interesting techno producers as of late, and also sweden’s favourite son - daniel andréasson - wanted to lend us a hand to really bring the point home with this record. laden heavy with distortion, this release goes further than one can call the lofi sound - instead the thought is taken to its logical conclusion: distortion is as much an element in its own right as time, space and velocity.
